Chalk

…it’s not just for kids anymore!

Chalking has long been a preferred medium of self-expression for students at Wesleyan University, especially within the queer community. Groups of students often go chalking under the cover of night, and the campus wakes up covered in hilarious, thought provoking, and often confrontational queer messages. When University President Doug Bennett announces a ban on all sidewalk chalking, the students respond–how else?–by throwing a rocking chalking party.

Chalk! is a 6 minute short documentary I made my Senior year at Wesleyan. It’s currently screening at the Frameline LGBT Film Festival in San Francisco and the Mondo Homo film festival in Atlanta. It will eventually be posted here. In the meantime, if you’re interested in viewing the film, you can contact me to request a link and password to view it online, or a DVD screener if you’d like to consider it for a festival or other exhibition.

Update: As of Spring of 2007, chalking on the ground is still officially banned at Wesleyan. However, that might change now that Doug Bennett has retired as president of the university. If you’re a current student at Wes, please send me updates on the issue and I will post them here.

I’m also interested in setting up a site promoting and following the use of chalking as part of the public discourse. Let me know if you’d like to help!
